Abra Kadabra!!

I forgot to tell you about my other Memorial Day "crafts" project. While rooting around for potential seat boards for the benches, I discovered this old signpost, bare wood, weathered and worn. I knew what I wanted to do with it the moment I laid eyes on it...and so I sat down with some miscellaneous paints and voila...the International Symbol for "Garden." Once it's properly located, it will serve as a hose guard, too.

We are awash, of course, in clouds of yellow pollen, now that the oaks have begun their annual sex party. I'm still sort of amused at myself for thinking yesterday was the right day to wash our cars. In fact, I remember thinking, as I did so, "Oh, good, this means it'll rain soon." But no...just waves and waves more pollen...coating everything, including this sunflower seedling in the back garden.

Fortunately, the pollen doesn't give me too much trouble, except as regards appearances...and the odd explosive sneeze. Which is good, as this is sort of an exciting time in the garden.
In the fall, and throughout the spring, in my quest for the ultimate, overgrown cottage garden look, I've followed each weeding session with a pretty casual scattering of different seeds. Some were collected in other parts of the garden, or in other gardens...or just along the side of the road. Some were from grocery store seed packages. Others were just seedheads dropped into the garden from last year's beauties.

Now I'm starting to see lots of healthy looking seedlings...more appearing every day...and the most fun are those magical days, such as today, when I spotted these two...the lighter one to the left is a bachelor button...which to the right is something in the daisy family. It could be one of the wild ones...but it looks a little like the gazanias I had last year, too. Both seedlings are big enough that I ought to have laid eyes on them before...but it seems like they appeared from nowhere!

In the right foreground of this next pic is a yellow sulfur cosmos seedling I planted just this past week. I'm nearly certain there wasn't another plant crowding so close beside it when I did ...which means the upper seedling has popped up pretty quickly since then while I was busy looking elsewhere...like magic. There are an assortment of possibilities regarding the identity of this seedling, but rather than hazard a guess(I do have my suspicions), I think I'll just wait a while and see what happens.

A third yellow and brown iris came into bloom today. They are beautiful, and I'm enjoying having them here. Ungrateful bastard that I am, however, I am hoping there'll be some other colors in the vast array of irises which have yet to bloom.

I think this one is beautiful, especially in the close up (don't get me wrong) but because of the dark falls, it tends to look much smaller at a distance. (Note to self: move these guys closer to the paths, so you can enjoy their detail more in future years.)

How could I resist including this shot of some multi-toned allyssum blooming so peaceful at dusk? A charming way to end any day in the garden.
