Sun-Day

Morning light on azaleas.

Granny was telling me this morning that great-grandma Arretter Berns loved the Star of Bethlehem flower, and had many of them in her garden in Wood Ridge. I have some fairly fuzzy memories of her garden. I seem to recall mounds of phlox, and old bushes grown treelike, arching over grass pathways...and the scent of allyssum makes me think of her garden, however thin those childhood memories may be. It's easy to see why she loved these little stars.

It's not all beautiful flowers. Today I spotted my first lily leaf beetle of the season and, despite my more pacifist nature, wasted no time in crushing it between my fingers.

On a much happier note, one of the old irises from Willa's garden bloomed today...and it was not one of those I was anticipating: it was a terrific surprise to look up and see this beauty glowing in the back of the bed by some dangerous raspberry canes.

Great day, weather-wise. Temperatures in the 70s, with wonderful sunshine. Orioles and cardinals sang in the trees as I toiled in the garden, edging the paths, weeding a section and replanting it, deadheading old things, like the grape hyacinth seedpods. The usual assortment of chipmunks have become more active just in the last few days. Oh, and the first monarch butterfly appeared today, fluttering around. It actually seemed sort of agressive (well, for a butterfly) in seeking me out. On the whole, another great day in the garden.

Your pictures suddenly seem so much stronger in color. Is that because the sun came out? They're gorgeous!

Your garden looks delightful. :)
