Lots of the sweet william, in assorted locations around the yard, have come into bloom this week. Again this year, I'm just amazed with the broad color range of these sweet little flowers. These deep red-maroon ones are real dramatic, especially against a background of purple cranesbill.

White foxglove in the front garden gets lit from behind with late-day sunshine.

This pale blue iris blooms on the west side of the house. I hope to move it to a more open location where it can have some room to spread. I'm also not sure if it is a different color than the other blue-purple siberian irises, or if that's just a trick of the available light conditions where this one grows. Growing them closer together in the proposed new iris bed might help answer some of those questions, when I finally get around to digging it.

Here's another plant I'd like to cultivate and encourage more of. This purple sweet william is so quietly beautiful, growing almost in the driveway...looks like this one is spreading well on its own...but it, too, might enjoy a spot where it could do so more openly. Don't we all...?

On the way to the back garden, I discovered that the tall peonies by the top of our meadow had opened. Now here's a case for that Internet Smell-O-Vision...such a sweet, heady fragrance, I wish I could share it with you!

Here's a look at the evening garden, with grapes creeping in to the right.

I do want to take a moment to thank everyone who sends me such great comments about the blog. I really do enjoying keeping a record of the garden's successes and failures for my own gardening sake, but it sure has been fun sharing them with all of you, too. I know I haven't always taken the time to respond personally to your comments...but they do encourage me, and I'm so glad to know that, through the blogs, everyone else is enjoying the garden, too!
I found, for the second year in a row, one stalk of this different spiderwort. The flowers are smaller than the more ubiquitous blue ones...and appear to have only the two large petals per flower, and are an almost pinky-magenta color.

I've seen it advertised in catalogs for this color and also white...but the white I've never seen in person.
Last night's rain seems all that was necessary to bring on many more of the giant bellflowers. These guys are so different than anything else growing in the garden...how could they not make me smile?

Just imagine what the heatwave forecast for the coming weekend will do to cheer me--and them--on.
Lurking behind a low white foxglove and a bit of red valerian, you'll find the first bloom cluster of verbena bonariensis, rising toward the sky. Great purple color, huh?

The foxgloves will be past all too soon, so I hope you can stand just a few more shots of the beautiful stuff. I really caught some nice sunlight this evening, which it turns out is usually what the best photos are all about.
