The Lupines of Fort Hill

Since my own lupine plant is not doing spectacularly this year, I decided a little side trip on the way home from work today was in order. You see, the Cape has one of the best wild lupine displays you'll find...and its right here in Eastham.

You'll find them at Fort Hill, on the slope from the parking area, along the path to Doane Rock and Nauset Marsh.

As you can see there's a huge colony of them, in a wide assortment of colors. They look so fantastic in the late day sun.

The show varies from year to year, I've noticed...as last year there didn't seem to be as many. Nice crop this year, though!

When you go, make sure you have some time to spare, since the trail down to Doane Rock and along the edge of Nauset Marsh is fun to wander, especially with all the roses and campion and other wildflowers currently in bloom. I always enjoy wildlife encounters there...usually birds and bunnies, as I saw today; I've also seen foxes and owls. As is often the case, insect repellent is recommended.
