Since school vacation in Massachus
etts doesn't happen until next week, we found the traffic to be light and were in Provincetown, looking out over the harbor, fairly quickly. It was a beautiful morning, if a little chilly by the water.
We found PTown to be still something of a pre-season ghost town, though the tell-tale sounds of spring (rattling ladders, spitting nail guns...) were evident, along with the signs announcing opening on the weekend.
Glad to report we found the Portuguese Bakery open, and took a yummy lunch to go from there.
Love these for low maintenance window boxes! I imagine they just get prettier each day...
We enjoyed our lunch watching the ocean from Head of the Meadow parking area, scanning for signs of returning whales...and we might've seen a little bit of that, though it was hard to be sure. There were certainly plenty of offshore bird feeding activity, and we might've seen a spout or two.
After lunch the sight of what we thought was a foundering whale led us on a short hike up the barrier dunes.
Once we'd reached the summit, though, we found the dark object in question looked to be an old shipwreck, or similar piece of timber work, long decayed.
Still, great views of the ocean though, eh?
After a meandering drive down the coastline, enjoying the views along Ocean View Road in Wellfleet, we were back in Eastham and enjoyed a great walk along the bike trail.
Bird activity was high, and in addition to a great assortment of chickadees, cardinals and the like, we also heard what seemed to be whipporwills. And we also startled an entertaining family of partridges (there were eight--they only lacked costumes and an old school bus!).
