Evening Falls

After a hot day at work, there's nothing like wandering around the garden to see what the day brought. Tonight it was just a little cooler, though not much. I'm glad to say there's an occasional breeze.

As you can see, evening light creates as many nice opportunities as early morning does. I can't identify this little flower just now. It's just the latest of several of these which have appeared in a bed outside the house where Owen scattered some wildflower seed. Pretty little dude, tho, huh?

In the front garden bed, the daisies are all fading and will need to be cut back soon. But the three pineapple lilies are rising there and beginning to form their odd blossoms which seem so much like the tropical fruit.

On the other side of the house, a few flower bells of yucca catch the evening light.

In the Orchard Garden, here's a line-up of the usual suspects (l to r): purple garden phlox, fading shasta daisies, purple beebalm and that assortment of rudbeckia and possible coneflower.

There's always plenty to see, and tonight a woodpecker rattled against a branch of the cherry tree, a catbird foraged through a tangle of asparagus, roses and grapes...and a hummingbird buzzed here and there through the garden, perching occasionally to try a sip of some attractive blossom or other.

Because the Orchard Garden is a little lower than much of the property, the sun's good golden light had mostly fled from the area. But with a little bit of supporting flash, I was able to get some nice long shots of the area, to show off the newly-mown paths and all.

Emily and I had a bit of a walk (as always, she walked me) and I was able to get a few nice evening shots of Krogman's Pond, the kettle pond which borders our place.

The usual assortment of frogs were tuning up for their nightly concert.

Believe it or not, above is a photo of our house, as seen from the road this time of year. Talk about stealth mode, huh? I love this photo.

Meanwhile, in the back yard, long shadows race into night.
