Visiting Heron
A fading black-eyed susan weaves amongst the oregano on a warm August afternoon.
Cool breezes balanced the mild humidity in the air, and forecasts called for late day storminess to usher in cooler temperatures.
This bumblebee was hard at work in one of those "trackside" thistles.
The day's excitement came with a walk out to the mailbox, when we spied this blue heron chilling at the pond shore in front of the house.
Comparing with photos from a bird guide book, this appears to be a juvenile, since it didn't seem to have the brilliant white markings on its head we saw on the other heron Thursday.
After allowing that one good photo, the heron flew off to more remote parts of the pond. Here, it is barely seen from the road.
But I bush whacked quiet ly through the tall grasses of the lower meadow and found myself on the opposite shore from this great bird, where I was able to capture these images.
Shortly after, the heron took to the sky, circling around our pond while building up speed to fly off to more peaceful shores.
The gladiolas are continuing the yellow theme of this late part of the summer season.
Picotee cosmos balance out the yellow with a variety of other hues.
Having recently been dead-headed, the yellow African marigolds are returning with a fresh flush of blooms.
