Little Things

Yep, it's my own little Arbor Day celebration. After a long day at work, as I prepared to be away in New York again for a few days, I got home to find a small package waiting for me from the folks at the National Arbor Day Foundation: the free trees I received as my benefit for recently becoming a member. With the day's last light fading, I took shovel in hand and found them at least temporary homes in the beds of last year's ill-fated Three Sisters garden.

Now, I know it's hard to build up enthusiasm for little tree-lets so tiny I had to label the photo to help you spot them...but what is it they say about tiny acorns and mighty oaks? Anyway, here they are, in all their glory. 1) two crap apple trees, 2) two American redbuds, 3)two Washington hawthornes, 4) two white flowering dogwoods, 5) one crepe myrtle, and 6) three (got a bonus here) golden rain trees.

Sorry the numbers are so tiny--I thought I was making them large enough at the time. Anyway, they are safely in the ground, and will hopefully keep 'til I return. If even a few of them survive, I'll be glad for the additions. These days, we need all the trees we can get on this planet.
