Thursday Garden Report

Ah, morning in the garden on a day off. Could there be anything nicer? Morning's light brought no clarity about last night's cliff-hanger season finale of LOST, but at least we were enjoying temperatures in the 60s.

The pink azalea on the western side of the house picked this lovely morning to begin strutting its stuff.

Sunshine also coaxed the first blossoms of Star of Bethlehem in bloom.

Today, it became clear that we have more than one...or even two...orioles in the yard. At one point, I saw six of them (all males) flying together in a line, rollercoaster-style, through the trees and lower brush along the pond's shore...and the odds are good I may be singing their song in my sleep tonight.

Also joining the chorus today was this pretty pink portulaca flower.

On a nursery run to Orleans (I had need of an assortment of geraniums, impatiens, lobelia and petunias to fill assorted window boxes and other containers...), I made a side trip to First Encounter beach, where I found roses in bloom.

Back home in the garden again, the purple globe allium also joined the ranks of today's great flowers. (Another one nearby didn't fare so well, having it's stem bent just as it was about to join the fun...sigh...)

I'd also bought some cosmos seedlings (the traditional Sensation, as well as some of the yellow sulfur variety). Planting them gave me a chance to do some weeding in the back gardens before turning my attention to window boxes.

The purple creeping phlox in one of the whiskey barrels began blooming this week, too. God, I love this time of year...every time you turn around something else is sporting flowers...

The Queen of the May relaxes inside after spending the afternoon lounging in the sun.

While planting the window box on the side porch, I'd thought I could hear tiny bird voices clamoring for food...and realized the tufted titmice have once again nested in one of the old birdhouses built around our utility meter.

A titmouse checks me out before bringing food inside to the family.

Here's another dahlia in that hanging basket I got at the Ocean State Job Lot.

And a little more news from the back garden: the dahlia (of the yellow dinner plate variety) I planted out there last season (which never bloomed and I forgot to dig up in the fall) seems to be having another go this year. I spotted the first foliage poking up through the ground today. Woo hoo!
