Gray Skies

Not exactly a rainy day here, but certainly misty and foggy and chilly...and generally quite overcast. We had some gusty winds last night, but not much to speak of, really.
This morning, although I didn't bring my camera along for some reason, I had a walk out in the back to look at what the rain was doing. I noticed some small leaves of chrysanthemum coming up from the ground...and I discovered that somebody had nibbled the leaves off one of the phlox plantings...and I found the red rocket snapdragons from last season are sending up their first dark leaves...and I realized I will need to get another picture of that plant that was piggybacking on the iris. They have been seperated now, but the "mystery plant" is doing decidedly un-hosta things...in fact, it looks like its sending up some kind of flower...maybe like the alliums. Hmmm...
Also, naturally(not having my camera in hand), while I was pondering this last, I had rather close visits with a grackel, who swooped down to take advantage of some birdseed I scattered in the garden path the other day, and then a catbird, who seemed to be very interested in me...and my large pile of sticks waiting to be pruned into stakes. The great jumble probably looks like a great nesting site to him, so I'll have to get those taken care of in the next couple of days...or end up leaving them piled there in the way of the path until the nesting season's done for them.

Not that the weather's supposed to cooperate with such plans, as another storm is on the way, and it looks like we'll enjoy this sort of weather through the weekend. I made a short detour on the way home from work, in search of some shots that'd capture the day's heavy fog, taking Hemenway Road down to the boat launch that goes into Nauset Marsh...and surprised a pair of deer alongside the road.

They hid--quite well, as you can see--just a few steps into the brush, watching me very carefully, as I pulled over to watch them for a few minutes. They're attention was held for a few minutes before they wandered off, and I followed suit. As you can see, I found the fog.

And then I found the dog: Our own Dear, Emily Grace, was waiting outside for me when I got home.

I can only think the best job in the world would be; is to go to climate to climate and experience spring in a 4 month window. We in Pacific NW have had spring for about 3 months now and you in Maine are just emerging...it seems like.

Actually, Blog-O, we're in Massachusetts...just down the coast from Maine. Spring is well underway here...and nicely so, this year: usually, spring on Cape Cod is more like six weeks of fog and rain...and, excepting this week, this year's been much nicer. (Though the ticks have been active since February, if they ever napped at all this year...) Wouldn't you get tired of spring, though...all that building and anticipation (not to mention brush-clearing and raking), with none of July and August's fabulous gratification? I think I like Spring best with the other three seasons for comparison!
