Ah, the projects for an overcast day. Here's a view from up inside the big apple tree out back, looking down on the garden. We had some nice rain this morning, and then in the afteroon it cleared off a bit, actually threatening to be sunny a few times.
That didn't last, but it did stay warm long enough (it's cooling down now, late in the afternoon) to pick some shells out of garden beds (from shoveling snow off shell paths a while back), do a little more raking...and then I pruned the fruit trees. I know. Ought to have been done in the fall, but it wasn't...so it was done today.
And the branches that remain (mostly I cut out the whips, waterspouts and crossed swords...not to mention a healthy invasion of grapevines in THIS tree)will have more than enough blossoms in a week or so...and maybe our fruit yield will be better in a few months than it was last year. Truth be told, it was fun to climb up into the tree, and way easier than when I was doing it as a kid! Guess the tree's a little closer to the ground now.

Looking ahead to the waning days of the garden season, here are the little sproutlets from some of the Autumn Sedum.

A trio of tulip foliage frame a small clump of veronica, transplanted in last fall.

Clockwise in this picture from the upper left, you'll find the foliage of daylilies, hyacinth, daisies and grape hyacinths (smidge of blue visible as the flower clusters begin to rise), some wild daisies and also the whitish remains of last year's allyssum, which may well have re-seeded itself for this year.

Here (clockwise from left again) is Melissa (Lemon Balm), grape hyacinths, a green-eyed coreopsis and more grape hyacinths, with new red and green striped leaves of species tulips coming on after today's rain.

In the last two days, the foliage of those giant alliums I planted last fall have appeared and grown fairly tall.

And that giant bellflower plant I divided as I planted last summer...it's everywhere, and doing quite nicely. Should be fun to watch it grow upright this year, as it was a bit crowded in the pot of it I purchased in the late mid-season.
